Fun workouts to get you back into shape

Trying to get back in shape after months of laying around is so much more strenuous than when you are already in the swing of things. I think for me motivation is the hardest part. So whenever I am just getting back into it, I try to trick myself with a series of fun workouts.

Barre is a low-impact workout with moves that derive from ballet. You don’t need to have a background in dance to be able to participate. The exercises are easy on your body but provide real results if you keep at it. Pure Barre makes it super easy to start out, so you shouldn’t feel nervous to be a beginner. Its online hub walks you through the process.

Zumba is the well-known fitness craze that creates a workout out of an almost salsa-like, hip-hop dancing routine. The classes are really upbeat and fun, so you feel like you are just out dancing with friends.

Hiking is the oldest fitness activity in the book. As long as you find a mountain or trail with a significant incline and work up a sweat. Getting outside and seeing new places is rewarding for both body and mind. I always feel great afterwards and have a good time.

Spinning is one of my favorite classes at the gym. I always feel like I have worked my ass off when I leave, but while it is going on I enjoy pushing myself to the beat of the music. A mixture of jogging and speeding on the stationary bike with lower lighting and loud music allows you to forget about any apprehensions you have about working out in front of a group of other people and focus on your workout.

Piloxing is exactly what it sounds like. Pilates mixed with kickboxing and it is so much fun. The exercises combine core work with kick boxing moves for a complete total body workout. It is fast paced and works various sections of your body, so you are constantly changing it up. It eliminates that “but I just can’t do anymore!” feeling because when you get to that point, you are on the next sequence.

Kayaking follows the same idea of hiking. While I know I’m not introducing you to anything new with this, I can’t stress enough how much the activity makes me push myself while having a lot of fun. If you want to get the most out of your kayaking adventure in terms of a workout make sure you are going for the more advance course, if you are ready for it.

Pound is another workout program that lies heavily on music. Created by two female drummers who were looking for a way to have fun at the gym instead of dreading it, the workout consists of various exercises completed with the use of lightweight drumsticks. So you are pretty much joining the cast of STOMP! for your afternoon workout.

Rock Climbing has been my life goal to accomplish. While I wouldn’t say that rock climbing should replace your workout, but it is a great way to introduce a little fitness into your weekend activities. There are plenty of local indoor rock climbing venues that house courses for anyone from beginners to experts.

Tough Mudder obstacle courses and other fun themed marathons are an awesome way to get into shape and bond with friends and family. The Tough Mudder courses brings the imagination games you used to play a child into fruition, with a mud pits and even small electric shocks.

What are your favorite workouts?
